[from our correspondent.] , Acclimatisation Society.— The annual meeting of the above society was held at Owen’s Hotel on Saturday, the 23rd inst. There was a moderate attendance of members. Mr James Livingston, prsoident, occupied the chair. Mr Barlcyman, the treasurer, road the annual report, which showed that the society, during the year ending 31st March, had received £B4 14s, and expended £G9 Is lid, leaving a balance in hand of £ls 12s Id. The Committee wished to express thanks to Mr Brewer, of the Wauganui society, for the kind assistance received from him. Dir-ing the year 4,200 young trout were introduced, into the district, and distributed in the Waingongora and Ta Whiti streams. Au attempt is being made to obtain Hares from Christchurch, Nelson, or Auckland. Although opinions have been expressed that the streams south of the Tongahoe were not suitable for fish, the society intended to make the experiment. The report was adopted. Resolved that Messrs White and Bate be appointed auditors for thet ensuing year, and be requested to audio accounts for past'year; and that the accounts when audited be published in Patea Mail and Hawera Star. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the business. I don’t know whether the fifteen-gem puzzle has reached Carlyle yet, but it has got firm hold of Hawera. Yon may sec people with their heads between their hands, looking vacantly about. I expect soon that we; shall gain even more notoriety than-Wanganui for the number of persons who have “ gone off their heads ” through this fifteen-gem puzzle. At the Nomination of Commissioners for Hawera Road Boerd, Messrs T.Robson, T. Allan, Gr. Cane, M, Hunter, P. Riddiford, T. Morrison, and O. Williams were the only ones nominated ; and they were, therefore, duly elected. Normanby, not to be out-done by Hawera, called a meeting for last evening, for the purpose of discussing the erection of a Town Hall and Institute. A Pigeon Match came off at Mr Mason’s paddock on Monday. Messrs Douglas and Cunningham got up the affair, and had their arrangements completcted. There were 12 competitors, but the gnu was nowhere, the birds having the best of the contest; the weather also being very blowy. The following arc the scores :

There being a few birds left, the following gentlemen made up a sweep, and secured five birds out of six:—A. Owen, 1; H. Owen, 1; W. Dingle, I ; McLean, 1 ; McCutchan, 1; Hcaphy being the only one missing his. bird; As there were no more birds, the sweep .was divided. The birds had a rough time of it in this match, and even the bird that got clear carried away a lot of shot. Gun Ci.un. —On, Monday evening a meeting was held for the purpose of establishing a Gun Club. Mr Farrington was voted te the chair; and it was resolved that the name of the club be the Hawera Gun Club. After some discussion, it was' proposed by Mr Iliddiford, seconded by Mr Lee, that Messrs Parrington', Owen, and Cunningham form a committee to collect facts as to the formation of such a club, and lay their report before a meeting to be held Saturday week. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the business, after which .there were some complimentary speeches made, and the health of Messrs Douglas and Cunningham, the originators of the pigeon, match, was drunk, and that of the successful shootist, Mr Southey. Mr. F, R, Jackson’s sale is,announced for Friday. , • . | Mr O’Connor and his staff, who hare been laying off the railway line between Taugahoe and Manawapou River, are to be shifted, but I do not know to where—probably to the south of Carlyle, or to a trial survey on the Waimate Plains. . The weather continues bad, and gives no sign of clearing np. - The Mountain road is in a fearful state.
