NO MORE WEEK-END

JRAVEL FOR SOLDIERS FURLOUGH EXTENDED Electric Telegrapu—Press Association GISBORNE, Oct. 1. An alteration in leave granted to eliminate week-ends off for travel was announced today by the Minister of Defence. Mr Jones announced that in view of the restricted travelling facilities and the urgent necessity for conserving p»*ttol, coal and tyres, the War C’a hi net h»d deckled to review the leave priviliges grant ed to soldiers in the past. Furlough of seven days every fi months and week-end leave to enao. a soldier to have 24 hours at home approximately once a month have been granted. This furlough and week-end leave, especially the latter, have placed a heavy load on the railway system and the inter-island ferry services and owing to the restricted services the week-end leave has resulted in many men being absent from their units for as much as six days and lias seriously interfered with the training an d efficiency of th© units.

Th© War Cabinet has. therefore, decided in the national interests to commute the furlough and long week-end leave into 10 days* furlough plus the time necessary to travel to homes and return to camp. Mr Jones said this extended fur* lough will result in a very large saving of travelling and obviate the frequent absences of men from their units as in the past. Free travelling warrants will bo provided for the men proceeding on furlough. In addition to the furlough th© existing provisions for granting leave in case of bereavement, confinement of wife, to attend to urgent domestic and business affairs, to prepare for and sit for examinations will be continued, said Mr Jones, and during week-ends except when field training is In progress liberal leave will be given to troops on Saturdays and Sundays.

Mr Jones explained that furlough is not granted to men in units and reinforcement drafts being organised and trained for service overseas but final leave with fre© travelling warrants is provided.
