265 CANDIDATES.

NOMINATIONS CLOSE. Nominations for the General Election in 76 European and 4 M ;uiri seats closed at noon yesterday. There are 265 candidates in the field, as compared with 189 for the 1931 election, and 212 ot the General Election of 1928. This election every seat is to be contested, and in some seats there are as many as five and six candidates. In all, candidates are contesting the election under seventeen banners, and this election, more so than propibly ever before, there will bo vote-splitting. Many who had declared their intention of going to the polls withdrew, and there were also some last minute extra nominations. The election is to be held on November 27. but the election to return the Maori members will be held on November 2 f 3.
