MEN’S REP. HOOKEY.
AUSTRALIA BEAT THE BAY. Electric Telegraph—Press Association HASTINGS, Last Night. Combination and fitness, especially the former, were responsible for the Australian hockey representatives defeating Hawke’s Bay here to-day by four goals to one, in the presence of over 1000 people. The game was particularly fast and always interesting. The first spell was unexpectedly even, Bay more than holding their own and showing surprising defensive ability. The spell was scoreless. Alter the change-over, Bay attacked strongly in the first 15 minutes to open the scoring, Fitzmaurice finding the net. f rom this stage on, the Australians settled down to make effective use of their superior combination and team play. The score was quickly evened by Stenning, but it was some time before the home defence was again pierced. However, when it was, about ten minutes before time, the visitors scored three goals in quick succession, netted by Penman (2) and Milner. Bay were tiring badly and feeling the effects of the early fast play.
