The recovery of an old medal (says the Rotorua Morning Post) is reported in very interesting circumstances. Away hack in 1863 Dr. J. Gibson Smith was awarded a silver medal by the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association as a prize for the hackney horse Sovereign. The doctor cherished the medal (among many other trophies from the show ring) for over twenty years. Then, in good sport, it was ‘‘pinched” by a friend. It remained out of the Smith family for 45 years until the son of the culprit the other day met the son of the winner in Rotorua (Mr Hugh Smith) and restored to him the “lost” property.
“You do strange and delightful things in New Zealand,” remarked Hendrik Willem van Loon in the course of one of his lectures in Auckland. “When a stranger walks down Queen Street people ask him if he really is who he is, and when they are assured that he is himself they tell him that they have read and liked his hooks. It’s, all very flattering and delightful.”
