DUCHESS OF YORK SPEAKS
.Royal ladies seldom make a speeen 111 public, but the Duchess oi \ ork made an exception to this rule at the annual meeting of the Too H League of Women Helpers in Two thousand delegates from the United Kingdom and the Empire were present at the festival service at Southwark Cathedral, and in the evening at Kingsway Hall for the fifth annual service. The Duchess appealed for individual help in dealing with unemployment and other modern problems. She expressed her appreciation of the growth of membership of the League of Women. Helpers, which, she said, had its contribution to make in lightening the darkness of present-day conditions. Specialised work must have first place in such activities, but casual work in the form of innumerable small friendly jobs was always there to be done and was of great value. The Duchess asked that all present should return home ready ie> throw their minds and energies into transforming the black patches of the country into circles of light and friendship.
