Armed German Nazis oiossed the frontier into Austria and raided the hotel at Durchholzen where they shot a newspaperman, Di. George Bell, who refused to return to Germany in their err. They also severely wounded a friend oi Dr. Bell. Dr. Bell was an Englishman, who had lived in Germany for fifteen years. He joined the Nazi movement and became the political confidant of Colonel Roehm. commander- in-chiei of the Nazi Storm Troops. The “Arbeiter Zeitung.” in an article on March 19. described Dr. Bell as liaison officer between tlie Hitlerites and an international magnate who* subscril»ed largely to the Nazi cause. It said that Dr. Bell met the magnate in London last year, and big credits for the Nazis loJlnwed. The “Daily Express.” however, recalls that Dr. Bell reached Harwich and was not allowed to land. The authorities gave no. reason. Dr. Bell returned to Berlin in fear of the Nazis. The leaders in Munich decided that he was untrustworthy. He recently revealed sensational details concerning Colonel Roehm. These were hot.lv resented in Nazi circles. After that Dr. Bell was a doomed man. He finailv fled from Berlin to avoid arrest. Hu? pursuers cut tha telegraph wires at Durchholzen liefore entering the village. They were heard urging Dr. Bell to ret uni to Germany, saying that his mother and sister, seized* as hostages, would then be released. Dr. Bell replied that he would return only by train and not by motor-car. The hotel hoots, hearing the shooting, rushed into the room mid saw Dr. TTeR dead, on the floor. He was himself shot in the leg. The murderers drove at high speed }>ast the Austrian frontier guards, who are stated to have fired at their. It is stated that Dr Bell was chief witness for a Munich Sociali-t newspaper which was sued for live! in 1932 and that he was acquitted of forging Russian currenev notes in 1930.
