A MOB OF COWS
SECOND EDITION
STRUCK BY EXPRESS TRAIN ELEVEN ANIMALS KILLED. Electric Telegraph —Pretss Association DANNEVIRKE, This Day. The express train from Wellington to Napier on Saturday afternoon ran into cows at the Maharahara crossing belonging to J. CL Doyle, a farmer in the vicinity, eleven being killed. An eye-witness remarked than it «as a miracle that some of the front carriages had not derailed the locomotive which was very little damaged, hut the rails were slightly twisted. The cows got out of a paddock through a gap in the ■ fence caused by the heavy wind. About 25 out of the 50 had 'crossed the line just as the train came round the bend about 400 yards away. The engine driver blew the whistle twice which apparently frightened the animals which were over the crossing, and cowlike, they in;mediately stampeded back* A jam occurred and although the train driver applied Hie emergency brakes the engine dashed into the mob with the above-mentioned results. Doyle estimates his loss at between £2OO ’ and £3OO.
