CAPTAIN COOK

SECOND EDITION

HIS LANDING CELEBRATED CEREMONY AT KAITI BEACH. Electric Telegraph-—Press Association GISBORNE, This Day. Representatives of public bodies and a large gathering of the public attended at the Cook Memorial on Kaiti beach yesterday afternoon to celebrate the 159th landing of Captain James Cook. A short religious service followed speeches honouring the great navigator, and by the placing of wreaths on the monument. Reference was made to the fact that the ceremony was taking place on the actual site where Captain Cook first set foot on New Zealand soil. Mr J. R. Kirk, who presided, read a message from the chairman and council of the Royal Colonial Institute associating themselves, with the honour paid to the memory of Cook, also messages from the Premier, Hon. K. S. Williams, and Returned Soldiers’ Association. A stirring address was delivered by Dr Mcllraith.
