MASSACRES IN NEW GUINEA. (Received 11 a.m.) United Press Assn—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, This Day. Sir Herbert Murray, LieutenantGovernor of Papua, lias just arrived here. He deprecates the alarmist reports of massacres and tribal risings in New Guinea and reclares that the residents iregard these reports as a joke. Nevertheless, they do the country a lot of damage. One affray cost nine lives, whereas the report stated that 500 were dead, which was a pure fabrication. —Australian Press Assn.
