The Pahiatua Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1928. CANCER CONFERENCE.
T'litj Empire Cancer. Conference at present being held in London is attracting widespread attention. Important theories have been advanced for the prevalence of this modern scourge. World-wide research is proceeding, and the reports from one of the latest series of experiments, at Sydney University, have been distinctly encouraging. The compilation of statistics in regard to the disease has also' become more or less standardised during the last few years anc! this, of course, makes for a truer of the actual death rate. Fifty years ago tuberculosis was the most deadly disease in New Zealand, the death rate from it reaching the high rate of 15.64 per ICOO population. By medical research, improved methods of treatment, and, above all, education of the general public this death rate has been reduced to 4.86 in 1927 and there seems no reason why it should not lie brought considerably lower in the near future. So far as cancer is concerned the problem is admittedly a more serious one. As in the case of tuberculosis, however, education of the general public is receiving greater attention than ever before. While advice as to treatment is obviously a matter for the medical profession only, the main thing to remember is that the earlier skilled attention is sought the greater the chance of recovery.
