MATCH AT MAKURI

JUNIOR GAME. The above game was iplayed on Mr D. Butcher’s ground on Saturday in fine, but bitterly cold weather, a cold, isou-westerly wind sweeping across the field making it unpleasant for the large attendance of supporters of both clubs who were present. The game throughout was a good clean one. At times the game wa-s fast arid furious and exceedingly exciting to the spectators. The game was mostly a forward one. The kuri peck was bv far the heavier one, hut tliev did not appear to use their full weight in the loose and ruck. The Eketahuna vanguard.

amongst whom there are some very fast men, who when a rush was started nearly always forced through the opposition, with the ball at toe, played a great hustling game, and on several occasions Makuri was compelled to force down. The most outstanding of the Fketahuna forwards were Ross, Duff and Gourdie, who were ably backed up by the rest of the pack. Ross shone out well in the loose, but appeared to shirk the heavy going. Duff played a good hard game and was always there when any hard work was to be done.

The king forward position was filled by Gourdie. This player diet not protect his half enough with the result, on occasions, Fafeita received hard knocks.

For Makuri. Smart and the. Rutherfurd Bros, were outstanding. The backs were fairly even. The Makuri men, however, did not combine as well as Eketahuna, but some clever individual movements were witnessed. Once a back rush was initiated by either side, it did not last long on account of bad, passing and gaulty handling. Fafeita played his usual hard game as. half-back. He received the ball out of the majority of serums hut failed to feed his backs as he might have done. During the game he played a lot to the blind side, which movement usually came to an abrupt termination by the ball going out, and with no advantage to his side. Had he fed his backs on some of these occasions a try or two might have been the fruits of such a. move. Qliphant again was a great asset to his team by his. great linekicking. On numerous occasions he got his side out of scrapes by his powerful line kicks. C. Oliver came in very handy in this department of the game and throughout played good football. Mason also played an excellent game. For Makuri Day and Bennett played well for the Makuri rearguard. THE, PLAY.
