FRIENDLY SOCIETIES
MANCHESTER UNITY. Speaking r.t Ashburton Bro. F. W. Watt, P.G.M. of the Manchester Unity, traced the growth of Odd Fellowship from early times and said that in A.D. 55 there was a society for the benefit of its members. Titus Caesar conferred on the society then existing the name of Oddfellows. In 1800 there was a lodge in Dover and another in 1804, and from that time onward, they were frequently founded. The first grand master was elected ill 1806 and 21 years later the first beard of directors was appointed. In those days the G.M. was chosen from members of ledges in or near Manchester. Bro. Watt then dealt with the activities in America and the founding of the order in New Zealand. The present-day membership of the M.U. 1.0.0. F. is over 1,500,000. An active interest in outside things, had always .been shown by the members, and after the Crimean War £2582 was collected by them for patriotic funds. In 1862 £IO,OOO was disbursed to indigent cotton operators. He did not wish members to think that their order was doing all the friendly society work in the world, as all the other great orders were doing their share.
