MOTOR ACCIDENT

LOCAL BOXER INJURED CAR OVERTURNS ON MAIN ROAD. The numerous friends of Mr Jack Crowley, local boxing instructor, will be very sorry to learn that he temporarily sustained a K. 0., last night, but he expects to be able to don the gloves again in a few days and be quite fit for his fight with Mark Carroll at Wanganui shortly. Mr Crowley motored from Wellington yesterday, where he had been undergoing training operations. About 7 p.m. he was proceeding in his 5-seater car to Woodville, to give his class instruction. In the front seat with him was Mr T. Furlong (AVgtn) and in the back seat were Messrs ,T. Beech and H, Compton, of P'ahiatna. At the Makuri road corner. an alleged unlighted cycle suddenly appeared in front of the car, proceeding in the same direction and about the middle of the road, and in order to avoid a tragedy, he swerved his car to the right, with the result that the vehicle mounted the bank, about 3 feet high, then turned over on the metal road, throwing the occupants out. one or two of them falling on the driver. Mr Crowley, who states that- he was travelling- about 25 miles an hour, sustained concussion, and was unconscious for a couple of hours. He received medical treatment and then wa removed to his room at the Rutland. Hotel. It is stated that the cyclist did not stop to enquire what had happened, but disappeared as quickly as possible. About this time, another car, from Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, appeared on the scene, it being only a short distance away, and the two occupants rendered prompt assistance. This car was driven by Mr G. Woods. Mr Crowley was attended to by Dr Paterson, at the surgery. The other occupants escaped injury. Mr Crowley this morning had shown much improvement. His car sustained some damage. Despite the fact that offenders have been freoiiently be to re the Court for riding cycles without lights, they still persist in doing so.
