Owing to the local Telegraph office being open for only an hour on Saturday morning and consequently no Press messages coming through, the “Herald” will not be published on

Saturday. The Education Board has made a grant of £lO 10s for the Mangaono School, and £6 for Pukehinau. The Mart auction sale will be held to-morrow (Friday) instead of on Saturday (King’s Birthday). The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua County Council will be held on the 10th inst., instead of on Saturday next (King’s Birthday). A Hawera resident, named J. B. MendeLson, was lined £lO on each of two informations for breaches of the Stamp Duty Act. By a majority of 139 votes, Mr R. B. Ross, ex-M.P. for Pahiatua, has been re-elected a member of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board. His opponent was Mr J. Steele .of Gisborne. A petition in bankruptcy has been filed by Mr W. Tosswill, solicitor, Pahiatua. A meeting of creditors will be held at Pahiatua on Friday, Bth inst.

Supper was provided by the ladies. A case of interest to farmers and commercial men was decided in the Wellington Supreme Court recently by Mr Justice Chapman. The case was Osmond Bros. v. A question of considerable moment to parents ot school children —uniformity of books —was brought under discussion at the meeting of the Danneviike South School Committee by Mi F. Craven, who said the books in nearly every school were different. Books used by older pupils of a family were absolutely of no uso to the younger ones, and the buying of new Ijooks every year meant a lot o i unnecessary expense to parents. It was resolved "that in view of the present need lor national economy, and the large amount of unnecessary expense —which fails on the man with a large family—the time is opportune for the Education Department to formulate and institute uniformity of school books; and that a copy ot this resolution be sent to the Education Board
