SERGEANT-MAJOR IN TROUBLE

Electric Telegraph—-Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. As the sequel of the recent death of a young woman, Edna Beatrice Hogg in the Wanganui Hospital, Richard Patrick Pollard, a sergeantmajor in the Defence Forces at Hawera, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with illegally using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage. Dr. Earle, honorary surgeon at the Wanganui Hospital, said that the woman’s death was due to blood poisoning. The principal witness for the police was Frederick Timms, typewriter expert, who stated that a letter purporting to be sent by accused to deceased was typed on a Royal Borloek typewriter in the Defence Office at Hawera. He said the machine and imperfections in a certain letter which were repeated consistently in the correspondence which «as typed on the machine.

Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial.
