PONGAROA BRASS BAND.
Til IST ANNUAL BALL. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The Pongaroa Brass Baud, which was initiated last spring, has made inpiil progress since its formation, and has at various times rendered programmes of music in Pongaroa. Some time ago the members of the band decided to arrange a plain and fancy dress ball. Liberal support was accorded by the residents, and as a Jesuit the function, which was held in the Pongaroa Hall last Friday ovenpng, was considered by many as tho best social gathering ever held in Pongaroa. There was a large attendance, including visitors from all parts of the Akitio County, and also from Pahiatua, Wanganui. Masterton and the Hutt. The interior of the hall had ! been tastefully detVrrated in the afternoon by an energetic committee, and tile Hour was in capital order for dancing. In order to facilitate the hupper arrangements a large marquee • ; was erected at tlio. side oj; the hall. A iirst-chiss supper was provided, deli- ’ cacies such as trifle, fruit salads and jellies being contributed by the lady ■ i supporters of the band. Tilt- music I for the dances was supplied by the j hand under the oonductorsliip of Mr .1. Trezise, and by all orchestra consisting of Messrs H. Cornwall (piano!, H. Ashworth (violin), J. Troughear (cornet) and P. 11. Kent (clarionet). “Extras’' were also played by Mrs B. 15 Dawson, Mrs M. Ferriok anil Mr J O’Connor. Tile M's.C. were Mess s i(r Lomas and J. McKay.

Dick ins, president of the hand, made a few remarks, and expressed the band’s appreciation of the excellent manner in which it had been supported. On behalf of the hand, h t . thanked all those who had assisted in making tho | first hand ball such an unqualified success. A number of those present were ! attired in fancy dress, some of the cos- ! tunics worn being decidedly quaint I and original. The following wore 1 ancy costumes:— Miss K.
