McCarthy and family, who are leaving the district, took place on Friday, the 3rd last., wlnn, being favoured with « glon ms night, there was an attendance of about sixty persons. Dancing commenced about 8.30, and (luring an interval Mr J. 1). -Murphy, in ai very neat little speech, voiced the general regret of those assembled ait tile coming departure of Alt and Mrs .McCarthy and family. He also expressed their appreciation of Mr McCarthy's work as a County Councillor, as chairman of the School Committee and the Domain Board, and of his services to tin- settlers sis a Justice of the Peace. Mr Murphy then presented a very handsome .silver tea-jiot, to Mr and -Mrs McCarthy) and a case of silver-mounted pipes to Air McCarthy. The tea-jxit was inscribed as follows: “Presented to Mr a lid Mrs Jno. .McCarthy as a mark of esteem by tile- settlers of -Makuri District. 3/5 12." Airs -Murphy, Aliss 1,. Moore, Miss Diamond, and Mr Howard were responsible for tile music, while songs were rendered by Airs T. G. Scott and Mr .1, Allen. Air .1. Murcott was the indefatigable AI.C. file weather during the past week lias again been of the mixed variety. Thursday and Friday were all that could be wished for, hut we returned to inclement weather to-day (Saturday).

(From our own Correspondent.) A medical mail was told the other day by a patient living not a hundred ini!c*s from Ha-mu a, that she did all tile vegetable and flower gardening, milked eight cows night and rooming, and looked after six men folk's wants, kept a large eight-room-ed house ill order, and was expected to go out and earn sufficient pin money for herself and family. The pater familias is still wondering why milking is such a huge success, and why marriage is a fifilure and women so 'disagreeable. The above is absolutely true, and this is not an isolated ease, hut has its parallel in every dairying district. There has been a heavy rainfall here as elsewhere. The month of April gave us 8 inches 77 points. Cold winds, with hail storms intervening, have been the order of the day and night. The local footballers are to lie congratulated on their win last Saturday against Eketahuna. It is confidently anticipated that the sometime junior team will not he far short of winning the championship senior for 1912. Some two dozen senior cadets were put through their facings last Wednesday evening in the hall by Ser-geant-Major Bose, the Defence Department's instructor. “Compimsonx are odious,” wo all know, hut 1 consider the senior cadets were infinitely superior in earringo, precision and .discipline to the Territorials who were drilled some weeks previously. The reason is apparent, to the onlooker. The senior cadets have beam taken in hand ill their prime. Tiro Manilla Football Club is holding a social on Monday evening to raise' funds for the expenses of the coming season.
