Details of the public accounts for the quarter ended December 31st were recently published in the “ (lar.ettc.” On tlie ordinary revenue account the quarter began with a balance to credit of £575,945, and ended with a credit of £394,837. The ordinary revenue amounted to £1,900,471, the principal items begin as follow: Customs, £572,724; railways, £•11:1,(368; land tax, £337,478; stamps, £257,083; all the other items being under six figures. As compared with the corresponding quarter of 1903 there was an increase in the revenue of £82,781, or at the rate of over £320,000 a year, showing that the Government do not show a desire to lessen the burden of taxation, but rather to increase it, in keeping, presumably, with the methods of Seddoninn Liberals, who are, indeed, liberal with Ihe people’s money. Per medium of the custom-house there
was an increased revenue of £51,019; from stamps, £25,829 ; land tax, £10.518; and railways, £3291. The territorial revenue amounted to £55,,035, of which £43,373 was from pastoral runs, rents, etc., cash land sales only yielding £924(1, and deferred payment sales £415. The revenue from leased land was about £IO,OOO More than in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The expenditure from the Consolidated Fund amounted to £2,034,614. Permanent appropriations absorbed £903,701, a decrease of £ 1222, and annual appropriation) £970,913,
an increise of £845,35. The amount transferred to the Public AV orks Fund was £IOO,OOO, or £125,000 less than last yeau. The subsidies to local bodies were also less by £897, and old age pensions increased by £6765 for the quarter. The State Coal Mine Account shows that £4G,237 was received, and the expenses totalled £32,294. The expenditure on Public Works Account was £445,445. The Land for Settlements Account began with a balance of £393,490, and ended the quarter with one of £453,911. The receipts included £289,000 from debentures and leas? fees. The expenditure comprised £17.722 spent in the acquirement of estates, as against £17,920 for the corresponding quarter of 1903; £4784 for annual appropriations, and £222,279 under the Consolidation Act of 1900.
