Mayoral Election.
Mr W. Tosswill Elected
A large crowd gathered it the I Council Chambers on Wednesday o evening to hear the result ot the poll, t Tho contest throughout had been of f the most friendly nature, and the t three candidates baa stood shoulder f to shoulder at the polling booth door f all day, apparently anxious that , nothing should bo left to ch&noe. t The band turned out shortly after 7 p.m. and enlivened the half-hour's wait. At 7.30 the returning officer Mr G. C. Miller appeared and announced the result: Mr Tosswill, 143; Mr Burrows, 119; Mr McCardlp, 80. < Mr Tosswill then, from the Chamber steps, addressing the nrotvd, said that when he told them that was the proudest moment of his life ho told them what was perfectly tiue. That was his third attempt and lie had been successful, ilo thanked them most sincerely for placing him at the head of the poll. Not only did he thank those who voted for him hut be would assure all those who voted against him that he would do as much for them as he would have dono if they had voted for him. As far as the contest was concerned, with the exception of two or three little matters that had occurred the evening previous, it had been fought throughout in a perfectly friendly manner. Above all, he wished to thank the working men of I’abialua. for it was they who bad placed him in the proud position that he occupied that evening. With regard to the criticism he had received from the Herald, ho was prepared to shake hands with the Editor and let bygones be bygones. A call for three cheers for the successful candidate was heartily responded to. Mr Burrows was then called for. Addressing the crowd Mr Burrows ’ said lie congratulated Mr Tosswill upon bis success. He also thanked , all who had cast their votes in his favour. Cheers were also given for Mr ( Burrows. In response to imperative calls tor Mr McCardlc, who on appearing was ■ greeted with cheers, that gentleman ■ said he desired to thank thoße who ' had given him their support. He could assure them that although he * was at the bottom of the poll that 3 day be would at ibe next election e make another attempt, and no doubt i when he had three contests he, too, 5 would be returned at the head of the ' poll. He wished to Eay that the contest had been conducted in the most friendly spirit, and as far as be , was concerned be would, when coni ducting an election, always steer e clear of personal matters. Political i opinions should always be discussed 1 without introducing anything ci a ’ personal nature. He congratulated 1 Mr Tosswill upon his return and said lie would have another try at ' the next election, j Cheers were given for Mr Me--3 Cardie, i Mr Tosswill and a large number , of his supporters, beaded by the > band, thou marched to the Post •’ Office Hotel, where "Success to the “ newly-elected Mayor ” was drunk in . bumpers.
