Sixteen Buildings Destroyed

Invercargill, Thi3 Day. A disastrous fire oocurred in Gore this morning. It broke at 2 o’clock in Brewer and Trembath’s horsebazaar, and eleven horses and all the drags, coaches, buggies, saddlery, etc., were destroyed. The flames spread to the adjoining promises arid sixteen buildings were destroyed— Gibbs, auctioneer; Lord, saddler ; Popplewell, socitor; Dalgety and Co ; Neave, solicitor; Blaikie, surveyor ; Aitken and Broad, saddlers ; Jamie, watchmaker ; Esther, chemist; Trew & Co., ironmongers ; Stevens, tobacconist; Shaw, draper; Gresham, dentist; Fletcher’s office ; Ratliinore’s private residence. In nearly every case tho whole of the stock was destroyed. It is estimated the loss will amount to fully £15,000. The fact that a quanity of powder other explosives in Trew’s establishment deterred people from risking their livos as the explosion was expected at any moment, property that could have been saved was destroyed. The powder eventually went off with a load report, but noono was injured. But for the splendid efforts of the brigade the fire would have spread to the other side of the street. The insurances are not yet known.
