Received 10 a.m. A Magnificent Gift to the Empire. London, July 11. The Government of Cape Colony has offered to present a first-class battle-ship as a free gift to the Empire. Mr Gosclien’s reply gratefully accepts the offer and remarks that the gift is even more valuable, because it is unfettered with conditions. Mr Sprigg, addressing a meeting of the Defence Committee of the Imperial Federation League, said the Cape's naval subsidy to the British Navy was absolutely unconditional. They did not believe in fettering the Admiralty, preferring to trust to England. The Engineers’ Strike. London, This Day. The amalgamated engineers on strike demand not only a day’s work of eight hours, but that the wages shall not be reduced, and that all work done beyond 48 hours per week be paid at extra overtime rates.
