Bailey’s Return. Wellington, This Day.
A man named Bailey, a well-known drover on the East and West Coasts of this Island, who absconded in April last after selling a large mob of cattle in Napier, returned from Sydney yesterday in charge of Constable Gray. The accused was arrested in Dubbo and will be sent to Wanganui to-day. Sudden Death. Wellington, This Day. An elderly man named William Duffield, who arrived recently from Ashburton, died suddenly at noon yesterday, it is believed from heart disease. A Record Broken. Christchurch, This Day. At the Amateur Trotting Club meeting, in the competition for tho silver cup for any horse breaking the world’s record under American conditions, Specification was the only starter. He broke once or twice, but covered the distance in lOmiu 47sec, thus lowering the record by 54secs. Serious Accident. Auckland, This Day. Charles Stewart, a settler at Pukekohe, fell off the Waikato tram, sustaining a compound fracture of the left leg. The limb was subsequently amputated. Admiralty House. Auckland, This Day. It is stated Admiralty House will he renovated at a cost of £IOOO. Captain Graham, of the Wallaroo, will occupy the residence with his family. Football Matters. Wellington, This Day. The New Zealand Rugby Union has decided to call a meeting for the 21st to discuss the question of granting permission to Canterbury to play Otago. The South Canterbury team leave on their northern tour at tho end of July. The Marlborough team proceeds north on August 4th. The Wellington team proceeds north about the 25th August. The Taranaki team meets Auckland early in August. The \\ airarapa team goes South in September. The New South Wales team will probably open the tour in Auckland on August 25 ib and travel to Taranaki, thence to Napier, and as far south as Timaru, finally leaving Wellington for Sydney. The request that the New Zealand Union should visit next year has been deferred, and it is suggested that two years hence would be better, meanwhile Queensland to fulfil its obligation by visiting New Zealand. Heart Disease. Invercargill, This Day. Dr Galbraith has died suddenly from heart disease. The Land Tax. Wellington, This Day. The Land Tax is payable next month. Hitherto it has not been clue until December.
Ministers Improving. Wellington, This Day. The Ministers who are ill are im proving.
Bailey Remanded. Wellington, This Day. Bailey, the absconder, has been remanded to Wanganui. Divorce Court. Wellington, This Day. In the Divorce Court to day suits were made absolute in the following cases :—Skinnerv. Skinner, husband’s petition ; Rowe v. Rowe, husband's petition; Kitchen v. Kitchen, wife's petition, petitioner to have charge of children ; Gallyhawk v. Gallyhawk, husband's petition.
