The approaching general election is already causing the people here a desl of excitement. A resident the other daxoffered to lay any odds against Mr Smith being returned. Since the Umutaoroa Block affair the present member's popularity has been on the wane. Still, my own opinion is that the district, and 1 >anevirke particularly. Ims much to thank Messrs Smith and ( adman for. Look at the amount of labor they have employed and the expense they went to in laving a steel tram into the bush. Mr Smith has done a great deal of good for the district during his membership. 1 hope to again see him returned. Mr Hunter is laying himself out for the race this time. He was here the other night addressing a meeting; and already his committee are working actively. Mr CarUle, too, was down here lately, and people connect his visit with the approaching election. Taken all in all Mr Smith xvill require all the support the people of Pahiatua can give him. Golds are prevalent in the district just Two axe accidents happened last week. A young man named Anton Christophers n cut his knee badly and had to go to t ’>e Napier hospital ; and another young man, George Hutchins, inflicted a severe cut on his foot. Both are progressing rapidly towards recovery. Mr H. Monteith reports : -My monthly sale took place last Monday in a continuous heavy downpour of rain, but notwithstanding 120 head of cattle were yarded. The attendance was large and bidding spirited. Only a few bead left tiie yard unsold. Prices realised were as follows : Oattle—Dairy cows. £5 to £7 ; store cows, £3 5s to £4; 2 to 2. 1 . -year steers, £3 lfis to £4 ; yearlings to 18-months, mixed, £2 15s; yearlings. £2 2s fid ; weaners, 395. Horses—Draught mare. £2B; 2-year eolt by Randwick, £10; other light sorts unbroken, £4 to £7.
