MARRIED WOMEN TEACHERS

NOTICES OF DISMISSAL WITHDRAWN FURTHER ACTION CONTEMPLATED. AUCKLAND, August 5. In consequence of Mr Justice Herdman's decision, delivered yesterday, the Auckland Education Board decided today to withdraw the notices of dismissal previously sent to about 50 married women teachers. Further action is contemplated. The board decided to ask the Minister whether the court’s judgment represented his desire when he brought the amending legislation before Parliament. POSITION OF EDUCATION BOARDS ADDITIONAL POWER SOUGHT. WELLINGTON, August 5. Widespread interest has been aroused by Mr Justice Herdman’s decision in Auckland yesterday declaring that education boards are not empowered to dismiss married teachers under the Finance Act of this year. The question was raised in the House to-day by Mr G. C. Black (Motueka), who asked the Minister of Education (Mr H. Atmore) to introduce this session legislation empowering education boards to dismiss with the approval of a senior inspector any female married teacher at present employed in their districts. Acting in terms of the Finance Act Mr Black said that the Nelson Education Board, for example, had given notice to several married women teachers in its employ after full consideration of the individual cases and understanding that the intention of Parliament last session was to vest them with such discretionary powers.
