No. 5. The Chums wanted to see if King Canute would reappear, and when he did not do so they went in search of him. They had not gone far when they came to a large cave. “ I wonder what’s in here?” said Teddy. “ Better go and see,” suggested Golly. “We shan’t find out standing out here. Why, you’re frightened of the dark!” he cried, seeing Teddy hung back. “ Who is?” sniffed Teddy and marched boldly in only to dash out in a few seconds looking very pale. “ T-t-there’s a m-m-man in there!” he gasped. “ What of it?” said Golly bravely. ” Come on!” They crept in and when their eyes grew accustomed to the darkness, made out the figure of a man seated on a rock, gazing intently at something -in the cave. At first they couldn’t see what it was. Then they saw that at the end of. a thread, the breadth of a hair, a large spider was dangling. When the man saw the Chums, he pointed at the spider. “ I would fain tarry here to see if yon fellow succeeds in climbing up. Many times he has failed. If he succeeds, so shall I and none shall say that King Bruce did not try again. See, he’s climbing up!” They all stared breathlessly. Steadily, steadily the spider climbed up —up —up —up—ah! He was home. “ So shall I win!” cried Bruce and with head high strode out of the cave.
