OPTIMISTS’ CLUB

LUNCHEON ADDRESS. Mr A. F. O’Donoghue, who was the lecturer at the Optimists’ luncheon on Tuesday, delivered an interesting address on Some Aspects of Radio Broadcasting,” dealing chiefly with the features governing the broadcasting of a twoway conversation. He detailed the various aspects of the work entailed in preparing for and carrying out the twoway conversation between 4YA, Dunedin, and 2XAF, Schenectady, New York, when Admiral Byrd, on his return from the Antarctic, entered into a radio conversation with his principals and friends in America. The lecturer used diagrams showing the relay lines that were necessary to link up the New Zealand stations, and the relay lines that were used throughout the chain of 2kmerican broadcast stations. An interesting description was given of the reception by 2ME, Sydney, of 2YA, Wellington, the rebroadcast of 2ME by 2XAF, and the return conversation from 2XAF to the respective New Zealand stations. In addition to these features it was explained that several stations on the Continent of Europe and in South America received the conversation as broadcast by 2XAF, and rebroadcast it again for the benefit of listeners within their limits.

In reality, the conversation from Dunedin to America and from America to Dunedin was picked up simultaneously by such a wide range of broadcasting stations that there were few corners the earth in which it was not possible to receive this world-famed broadcast.
