NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE. ASHBURTON, August 6. The New Zealand Boxing Association’s annual meeting was opened to-day, the president (Mr H. D. Johnston) presiding. The report stated that the year began with a credit of £1770, and ended with a credit of £2028. After a long discussion the conference approved of the principle that associations be permitted to pay professional boxers on a percentage basis, and appointed a committee to draft the necessary amendments to the rules, reporting to-morrow morning. The conference rejected a Whangarei remit for an examination of referees, and also a Hawke’s Bay remit limiting professional contests to 12 rounds. A Waimate remit—“ That associations in towns with under 3090 of a population pay 59 per cent, less fees to the New Zealand Association ” —was also rejected. The conference carried a Wellington remit—- “ That at the annual meeting associations have a vote for each permit used, and that between July 31 last and the next annua] meeting the levies to the insurance fund be suspended.” The sum of £lOO was granted as a loan to the Christchurch Sports Club. A request by the Napier and Hawke’s Bay Associations for earthquake relief was referred to the council for favourable consideration. The next championships were fixed for New Plymouth. The conference discussed the percentage question. Mr Bush (Northern Association) said the trouble had been that professional boxers had not been sufiiciently attractive, had been paid too much, and had not delivered the goods.

Mr Talbot (Wellington) said that Wellington would definitely not work on a percentage basis.

Mr Curtayne (Wellington) said the only way to get effective bouts was to get good boxers without guarantees. The only method of control could be an optional one—a straight-out purse or a percentage. Mr Livingstone (Christchurch Sports Club) said that some boxers exploited the association funds. Mr Hatch (Manawatu), supporting the percentage basis, said the controlling body should say where and when fights were to take place. Mr J. Kilmartin (Otago) said the New Zealand associations spoiled the professionals and gave them swelled heads. Mr Behan (Greymouth) said the position was that Wellington wanted to say “ We are the big dogs.” ASHBURTON. August 7. The Boxing Association this morning received the report of the committee appointed yesterday to draft amended rules for a percentage basis for purses. The matter was discussed in committee for two hours, the report rejected and withheld from publication, and the matter of purses left to the discretion of the associations promoting the contests. It was decided that in future the championships be held in September. The following officers were elected:— President, the incoming president of the Taranaki Association; vice-presidents, Messrs J. A. Heath (Napier) and H. D. Johnston (Ashburton); Appeal Committee—Messrs C. F. Sanders, V. R. Meredith, H. Mackenzie (all of Auckland); council —Dr P. F. M'Evedy (chairman), Messrs D. R. Hoggard, J. H. Simpson, E. Blundell, E. A. Dawson, H. H. Sterling and Colonel R. St. J. Becre (all of Wellington) ; trustees of insurance fund— Messrs W. G. Talbot (chairman), J. R. Simpson, and J. W. Heenan; hon. treasurer, Mr E. A. Dawson; auditor, Mr W. G. Talbot; secretary, Mr G. P. Aldridge. TEAM FOR OLYMPIC GAMES LOWE’S INCLUSION ANTICIPATED. ASHBURTON, August'B. The opinion in official circles is that R. Purdy (Auckland, feather), H. Thomas

(Wellington, light), and B. Lowe (Otego, welter), are certainties for the New Zealand boxing team for the Olympic Games at Los Angeles next year. The personnel will be announced early. The profit on the New Zealand tournament was £62
