LATE DR FITCHETT.

NOTABLE TRIBUTE OF ESTEEM. AUCKLAND, October 7.

The funeral of Dr F. Fitchett, a former Solicitor-general and Public Trustee, took place at the Waikumete Cemetery to-day. The remains were cremated. A memorial service was held at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Parnell, the service being conducted by Canon Fancourt, assisted by Archdeacon Mac Murray. The mourners included Mrs Fitchett, Mr F. Fitchett (of Wellington), Sir Walter Stringer, the Public Trustee (Mr A. S. Faire), and several members of the Auckland Law Society. Canon Fancourt said they had met to pay their last respects to a very great and a very good man. He was brought up in a Christian atmosphere, and by his intellectual attainments rose to a very high position. They thought of the deceased as a'great scholar, who almost up to the last moment was able to use his intellectual gifts and enjoy them. Then they thought of him as a great man who occupied one of the highest positions in New Zealand and in the course of his labours placed a strain on his health and strength. He gave all he could for his country and for the welfare of the people of his country. He was a great man of God and a wonderful disciple of Jesus Christ; humble and courteous for all his gifts. Those who enjoyed his friendship knew what a faithful and true friend he was.
