Wellington’s unbeaten record in Rugby football tor the past season draws attention to the fact that at present the capital city is at the head of the list in most major sports. Besides holding the Ranfurly Shield, Wellington is at present in possession of the three most important trophies for summer sports, the Blanket Shield for cricket, the Wilding Memorial Shield for lawn tennis, and the Athletic Shield for amateur athletics. In Association football the Wellington team, on the past season’s record, is second only to Auckland, the English Association Trophy holders, whilst the Chatham Cup for New Zealand’s champion Association football club reposes in a suburb of Wellington. The ladies’ hockey team tied for the knock-out championship trophy, but the men’s hockey team failed this season.
