A LIFEBOAT SERVICE.

WELLINGTON FISHERMEN’S REQUEST.

RISKS IN COOK STRAIT. WELLINGTON, October 7.

Recognising the need for the provision of some means of saving life in the event of difficulty at sea in Cook Strait, the Minister of Marine (Mr J. B. Donald) undertook this afternoon to consider the representations of a deputation of Island Bay fishermen and residents that a lifeboat service be established. The matter was raised as the outcome of the drowning tragedy off the coast last week. It was stated that there were over 100 fishermen at Island Bay, and 27 boats were operating from that centre. It was utterly impossible on such a night as that of the recent tragedy for any ordinary boat to put out from the bay properly equipped. The lifeboat was needed. The danger and difficulty of the coast about Wellington was stressed, and also the number of occasions that arose when help was required. r"

The Minister -said he was convinced that the fishermen would be ready to play their part if called upon. He could not say a clause would be included in the Bill this session.

When Mr Donald pointed out that it would take some time to procure a proper boat he was asked if he could provide temporary equipment. He said he would go into that and see what could be done.
