SUNDAY TRADING.

. AUCKLAND, October 10. “ The law has no desire to impose hardship on anybody, but the provision regarding Sunday trading must be obeyed." said the magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt), when dealing with a number of prosecutions of shopkeepers at Auckland He impressed on each defendant that such articles as confectionery, biscuits, and fruit must not be left uncovered. Defending counsel in one case said the Sunday trading law was based on an Act of Charles 11, “ for the better observation and keeping holy of the Lord’s Day.” He submitted that everything depended on whether the goods were exposed with instructions to sell. This particular case, in which a woman had a series of shelves containing biscuit and confectionery which could be seen from the counter, was dismissed, the magistrate saying that she had apparently declined to sell anything to be taken from the premises.
