On Saturday at Wingatui the Dunedin Jockey Club opened its spring meeting which had to be postponed on .account of rain. The weather was bright and pleasant until the afternoon, when a shower or two fell. Tweed and cloth costumes with warm coats and furs were generally worn, as the wind was cold.

Professor Benham -was the guest of honour at a party given by Mrs James Park, “ Elphinstone, prior to his departure on a year’s leave, which he intends spending abroad. Present were Mrs Benson, Mrs F. C. Turner. Mrs Herbert Black, Mr and Mrs Guy Batham, Mr and Mrs Spencer Scoular, Miss Black, and Dr Harold Finlay.

On Tuesday evening, the twelfth annual dinner was given in the Somerset Lounge by the women medical students. Dr Grace Stevenson (president), was in the chair. Several toasts were proposed and suitably responded to; also songs delightfully sung by Miss Theresa Craig. Present were Drs Siedeberg M'Kinnon. Marion Whyte, Marion Radcliffe Taylor, E. Chapman,

The Music Circle held an “ Open Evening ” on Friday at the Otago Women’s Club, when a large attendance of members and friends was present. Delightful items were rendered by Miss Letty de Clifford, Miss Mary Frazer, Mrs Wakefield, Holmes, Mr Davies (Welsh tenor), and Master Lex McDonald (boy soprano). The programme was much appreciated and enjoyed by the audience.

On Tuesday, the Mayoress, Mrs R. S. Black, at the Town Hall, entertained members of the British Immigration Club. There were representatives present from all parts of Great Britain. The hostess was attired in navy blue silk with a large hat to match. Present were Mesdames Rendall, M‘Allan, R. Jeune, Black, Fergus, Anderson, Henderson, Floor, Brown, Pinkerton, Campbell, Kirk, Briscoe, Stinton, L. Jones. The Dunedin Horticultural Society’s Spring Show, which was opened on Wednesday afternoon in the Pioneer Hall, was one of the best to be seen for some years. The narcissi were both numerous and beautiful, and of a very high standard. The polyanthus primroses were very fine, some of enormous size and-*gor-geous colours. A table of lovely hothouse cinerarias in the centre of the hall added a brilliant touch of colour to the scene. There was a very large attendance of visitors to the show, both in the afternoons and evenings.

The annual meeting of the Motor Circle at the Otago Women’s Club on Wednesday was largely attended by members. The circle is one of the most active, and distinctly useful in the club; and has done such excellent work amongst hospital patients and brought great brightness into many lives. After the election of office-bearers, a delicious afternoon tea was served in the dining room. The table looked charming with spring flowers. Present were Lady Ferguson, Mesdames AV. F. Edmond, W. BLENHEIM, October S. At the residence of Airs J. Youiv m Purkiss street, Springlands, Airs Young, and Airs F. Alogridge, entertained tlie members of the Ladies’ Bridge Club last evening. The drawing room, which yvas comfortably’ arranged for bridge, yvas tastefully decorated yvith bowls of spring blossoms. The prize for highest score yvas won by Airs E. J. Harvey. Airs Young yvas wearing navy blue floral satin de beaute, and Airs Alogridge bottle green spotted crepe de chine. Others present were Alesdames Bagge, Powell, Thompson, Bacon, Whibley, C. Mills, F. Bull, Thomae’, Duncan, P. Alonro, Sprosen, A. Farmar, and P. Wiffen.

Very pleasing and effective was the display of dancing given by Aliss Barbara Griffiths and her pupils in St. Patrick’s Hall on Thursday evening. The hall was yvell filled yvith enthusiastic spectators, and considerable enthusaem yvas expressed as the various events were brought to a conclusion. The stage yvas particularly’ effectiy'e, resembling a garden of flowers with giant hollyhocks adorning the latticeivork, while bowers of pink blossom lent additional charm to the scene. A quiet and pretty yvedding took place on Alonday afternoon at the Church of the Nativity, Blenheim, when Ada Elizabeth, fourth daughter of the late Air J. W. Humphreys and Airs Humphreys, of Blenheim, was married to John Lewis, fourth son of Air and Airs J. L. Rees, of Blenheim. Archdeacon Kimberley was the officiating minister. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Air C. Humphreys, was attired in a pretty gown of silver lace made over white crepe de chine. The dress was of uneven length, being very much longer at the back. She wore a lovely veil, which fell gracefully from a coronet of orange blossom, and carried a daintily arranged bouquet of freesias and maidenhair fern. Aliss Pearl Clinch, of Picton (niece of the bride), attended as bridesmaid. She yvas prettily’ frocked in soft shell pink georgette, with soft crinoline hat to tone, and carried a pretty’ posy of daisies, freesias. and maiden-hair fern. Aliss Ngaire AVatson, niece of the bridegroom, yvas floyver girl, and looked very sweet in pale pink crepe de chine, with a garland of flowers round her head, and carried a posy of mauve violas. WELLINGTON, October 10. A well-attended conference of delegates from the various branches of the League of Mothers took place in Wellington on October 9, when Airs J. S. Elliott (Dominion President) was in the Many matters of interest were discussed, some of policy, and others of general welfare. An enthusiastic tribute to Lady Alice Fergusson for her inspiration in starting the league in New Zealand was paid, and many thanks and good wishes

were forwarded to her from the conference. The year, it is stated has been one of progress and consolidation; 14 new branches have been formed during the year, the total .number now being 69, with 1063 new .members joining during the year. An interesting branch is connected -with lighthouses (Miss Richmond being the president) keeping in touch with these lonely outposts, and supplying them with literature, and corresponding with the members. The work is regarded as most valuable. The. members are at Cape Brett, Moko-Hinau, Cape Maria van Diemen, Pencarrow, and The Brothers. The circulation of the little magazine in connection with the league has much improved, and pleasure was expressed that co-operation has been established with the Women’s Institutes. It was hoped that the result might be increased usefulness for both movements. The announcement. that her Excellency, Lady Bledisloe, soon after her arrival, expressed her interest in the league,- and accepted the office of honorary president, was a great pleasure. A warm welcome was extended to her,’ with hopes that she would find the members of the league true to the highest principles of life in which she had shown such a real interest. In the provincial reports there was much of interest, and Otago was congratulated on fine progress. A delightful luncheon party was given to the delegates at the Women ? s Club by the Dominion president (Mrs J. S. Elliott) this being a very cheerful function, and later , in’ the. afternoon, when the work was finished, the delegates were entertained by Mrs C. White (provincial secretary) at her charming home in Selwyn terrace, the presidents and secretaries of the Wellington branches being invited to meet the visitors. Great pleasure was expressed at the consent of her Excellency , Lady Bledisloe to become Patroness and president of the committee. The Bank of New Zealand staff dance was a very pleasant one, taking place at the Adelphi Cabaret recently. The decorations were charmingly supplemented tor the occasion, and with an energetic committee, the evening was bound to be a success. The hostesses were Lady Buckleton, Mesdames Hempton, Reid, Moore Dixon, and Porteous. Included in Sir Henry Buckleton’s party were Mr Grose, and Mr and Mrs Addison. Coates and Mrs Coates were visitors to Napier for the week-end, and were present at the Napier Park races. They were the guests of Mr and MrsE. J. Herrick during their stay in Hawke’s Bay. Mr and Mrs T. H. Lowry, of Okawa. have returned from Auckland. Mr and -Mrs Heslop, of Christchurch, are visiting Auckland. Mrs F. G. M’Ardle, of Wairoa, is at present visiting Auckland. Mrs George Bowron, of Christchurch, who has been visiting Napier, has returned.

Mr. and Mrs Brendon, of Wellington, are visiting Napier. Mr and Mrs A. Wood and Miss E. Panting, of Opotiki, are at present on a visit to Napier, and are staying at the Masonic Hotel.

.Miss Joan Wright, who has been on a visit to Napier, has returned to her home in Wellington. Mrs J. Bundle, who has been on a visit to Wellington, has returned to her home at Greenmeadows.

Miss M. Goodall, of Wairoa, who has been on a visit to Dannevirke, has returned.

Miss M. Dean, of Wellington, is at •present on a visit to Napier. Mr and Mrs A. Winton, of Christchurch, are spending a holiday in the Wairoa district.

WAIKATO, October 10. The Hunt Club Ball, held in the Tauranga town hall, was a huge success. Visitors 'were present from all parts of the district. Those present included Mesdames F. Boyd, J. A. - A farewell party was given at “ Gwynnelands,” Cambridge, the home of Mrs Jennins, for Mrs N. G. Sutherland, who is leaving Cambridge to reside in Hamilton. Those present were Mesdames Nelson, A. H. Nieoll, W. Tod, I. Taylor, .D. Lundon, M. Wells, Neely, E. E. Roberts, Calvert. B. Couper, and G. G. L. Taylor, and Mieses Hart, Christophers, and Gwynneth.

The members of St. Peter’s Tennis Club held a dance in the parish hall on Saturday night. The guests were received by Mrs G. R. Barnett. Those present were Mrs K. Geary, Misses I. Pratt. K. Little, L’. Trythall, J. Gaze, D. Pratt, P. English, Wingate, I. M’Kinnon, E. Coombes, P. Bullock, R. Joyce, Judge, E. Bullock, and V. Sanders.

The annual dance of the Loyal Duke of Cambridge Lodge was held in the Regent Hall. Those present were Mesdames H. •Villiams. Kingdom M'Bride, Hicks, Scott, Chard. Bowden, N. Malham. St. John, G. Worms, Lethbridge, Bishop. Jones, ind Gordon, Misses E. Billing, E. Williams, A. White, M. Onyon, Burkes. N. Hunter, A. Bushell, H. Sharp, Hyde. V, Revell, Dale, Carson, H. Sharp, D. Harris, O. A farewell was given to Mrs M. J. Belgrave by the members of the Frankton Croquet Club on Friday, prior to her departure for Levin. Those present included Mesdames Denz. Wright, O’Brien, Mason, Bolton, Connell, Dillicar. Buckland, Toombs, Wigzel, Olive, Speedy, Halberg, Harris, Rockell, Clayton, Larney, Ashby, E. Brown, Price. Dwyer, Brough, and Carroll, and Miss Speedy.

AUCKLAND. October 9. The racing at Ellerslie last Saturday, when the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting was opened in showery weather, drew only a moderate attendance, and the new spring fashions were unable to show themselves, the wearing of coats and wraps being imperative. Ideal weather, however, prevailed for the second day, and smart light tweeds in costumes and ensembles were both popular and attractive. Pretty wide-brimmed ballibuntal and bangkok hats gave place to the close-fitting felts of last season. Some of the visitors to Auckland were Mrs T. H. Lowry (Hawke’s Bay), Lady Blunden (Ireland), Mesdames Gibbons (Cambridge), D. Manson (Christchurch), and Lindsay Upfill (Calcutta). A reception was" held last Tuesday afternoon in the Lyceum Club to welcome Miss Stella Murray to Auckland. Azaleas and other spring flowers were need to decorate the lounge, and the guest-' of honour was welcomed by Mrs W. H. Parkes, president of ,the Lyceum Club. During the ’afternoon a musical programme was gone through, after which tea was served in the luncheon room. Miss Betty Lee, who has been visiting relatives in Dunedin and Queenstown, has returned to Auckland. Mrs H. S. Fitzherbert, of Auckland, and her daughter, Mrs C. Chilwell, also of Auckland, are the guests of Mrs J. B. Wither, Palmerston North, for the Fitz-herbert—Platts-Mills wedding. Mrs Cantrell, of Dunedin, is a visitor to Auckland, and was present at the tea party given by the Victoria League last Friday afternoon in honour of Miss Stella Murray, the celebrated singer. .Mrs Hewitt, of Palmereton North, is visiting Auckland, and is staying at Hotel Cargen. The sympathy of a large circle of friends has been extended towards Mrs Fitchett on the death of her-distinguished husband, Dr’Frederick Fitchett, which occurred last Sunday after a short illness. Prior to the interment a memorial service was held in St. Mary’s Cathedral, the Rev. Canon ■Fancourt conducting the service, when a large concourse of friends was present. -.The tragic death of Mrs '-Dorothy Singer, which occurred last Tuesday morning, cast a feeling of great depression all over Auckland, for she was held in high esteem by. a wide circle of musical

friends. Mrs Singer wao always willing to give her services in support of any charitable cause, and Auckland will feel her loss keenly as an organiser of benefit concerts and entertainments. She was born in Auckland 37 years ago, and her family is comprised of a little girl of 11 and a boy of 9. The funeral was a very fine tribute to her memory’, for scores' and scores of motor cars, as well as those set apart for the carrying of wreaths and floral offerings, followed the remains to the Purewa Cemetery.
