CONTROL OF THE SPORT.
WELLINGTON, October 8.
Word was received to-day that the decision of the Union Cyclist Internationale regarding the control of amateur and professional cycling in New Zealand was in favour of a New Zealand union of cyclists. The decision is made subject to Australia relinquishing its control of local professionals. A final decision regarding professionals will be made at the next congress. SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY .OTAGO RIDER. CHRISTCHURCH, October 11. A. N. Ralston (Otago) easily won the South Island 50 Miles’ Road Cycling Championship to-day. The race was over an arduous hilly course with bad roads and a rough surface, steep hills, and many bends. L. W. Hill made the fastest time, 2hr 33min lOsec. The first to finish were:— Ralston (12jmin), 2hr 29min 20sec 1 W. K. Weir (7min), 2hr 29min Isec 2 R. G. Watson (22min), 2hr 44min 59sec 3 S. A. Jordan (8-lmin), 2hr Simin 40see 4 •L. M. Hill (ser), 2min 23min lOsec 5 PALMERSTON NORTH-WANGANUI RACE. PALMERSTON N., October 11. Perfect weather favoured the third annual Palmerston North-Wanganui Amateur Road Cycle Race to-day. Forty-three starters constituted a record field. Heathley (New Plymouth) put up 2hr 12min 27 l-ssec, a record for a 48 miles’ ride. The race resulted:— Hyde, Palmerston North (20min), 2hr 17min 43 3-ssec 1 Mackenzie, Palmerston N. (22min) 2hr 19min 43 4-ssec 2 Hirst, Feilding (26min), 2hrs 44min 56 l-ssec 3 The fastest times were: Heathley (New Plymouth), off 12min, 2hrs 12min 27 l-ssec, 1; Tinkler (Masterton), off 9min, 2hrs 14min 22 3-ssec, 2; M'Cord (Masterton), off 9min, 2hrs 14min 23sec. PALMERSTON NORTH-WELLING-TON RACE. AUCKLAND, October 12. Two Auckland cyclists, H. R. Dwight and C. A. Clarke, put up a distinguished performance in the Palmerston NorthWellington Road Race, held on Saturday by the - Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Club (Inc.), affiliated to the New Zealand Union of Cyclists. Both rode magnificently and more or less outclassed the rest of the field.
Together they made a fine showing. Clarke was the winner, and Dwight came second, taking home the honours, with Clarke as runner-up. The placing and riding times of the first four are as follow:—
C. A. Clarke (20min), 6hr smin 38sec 1 H. Dwight (ser), shr 50min 46sec .. 2 C. Tasker (20rnin), 6hr llmin 15sec 3 R. Black (35min), 6hr 42min 16sec 4 Fastest times: Dwight, Clarke, Tasker, and Bray (ser). The last-named took 6hr Ifimin 34sec.
