ISLAND TOMATOES.
THE FRUIT FLY MENACE. CHRISTCHURCH, October 10. Replying to Sir Apirana Ngata regarding the importation of Island tomatoes and the fruit fly menace, the president of the New Zealand Tomato and Soft Fruit Growers’ Council states: “It is nonsense to suppose that the fly will never thrive here. If this should occur the public will have many regrets, as an increase in price would be imperative, for the grower would have such heavy losses.” Mr Everett, of the Cook Islands, stated in an interview that it was possible to find fruit fly in tomatoes in the Islands. The fact that the Government will not allow any imports of oranges from the Cook Islands after September is sufficient to show that the menace is feared.
