HIGH SCHOOLS’ BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Otago High Schools Board was held on Wednesday, and was attended by Dr Thompson (chairman), Mrs S. M. Park. Messrs J. J Mallard, J. C. Stephens, R. S. Black, W. R Brugh, D. T. Fleming, M.L.C., Archdeacon F itchett, and Dr M. Macdonald. The financial statement showed that the receipts since August 18 had been £2lOl 2s 9d and the expenditure £2092 17s 6d, an excess of receipts over expenditure of £8 5s 3d. Ihe accounts to be passed for payment amounted to £1853 5s Id, of which £l4/4 Us lOd was for teachers’ salaries.—Received.

The principal of the Girls’ School wrote regarding the diamond jubilee of the school, and stated that the celebration functions would take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, January 30 and 31 and February 1, 1931.—Received. ■ Tlle , Education Department wrote asking whether there was any reason why the cost of the repairs to the stonework at the Otago Boys’ High School should not be found from the credit balance in the endowment income account at the end of last year.—The secretary, in a lengthy reply, had stated that the board could see no reason for departing from the normal course of charging the cost against the endowment revenue for the year during which the work had to be paid for, and as it was intended to commence the work towards the end of this j'ear it would, under that arrangement, be paid for out Ot "ext year’s rcvenu e, and the cost would ?noo’ a mi° n tbe Consolidated Fund until 1932. The reply was approved. Ihe secretary of the YM.C.A.. writing as to the fee for the use of the swimming pool for the Girls’ High School swimming classes, intimated that the fee would have to be raised. —It was decided that an offer of £2O should be made for a season extending to the end of April. The Minister of Education wrote in connection with the matter of granting a sawmilling license over 700 acres of forest, included in the board’s reserve, stating that, on further consideration, he had decided to approve of the granting of sawmilling rights, and of the proposal to pay “ fifths ” to the Clutha County Council. —Received.

The Director of Education wrote advising that a subsidy of £l3 14s 9d had been approved of towards the purchase of library books for the Girls’ High School.—Received. The rector reported as follows:—The school had duly reassembled on September 16. The total number of boys; so far as could be at present ascertained, was: 678. of whom .242 were seniors, 418 juniors, and 18 paying pupils. The corresponding totals for 1925-29 were respectively 624, 626, 651, 681, and 662. In the first week of the term holidays the school football team had visited Invercargill for the purpose of taking part in the annual high schools’ tournament with the Christchurch, Southland, and Timaru Schools. The performance of the boys though they were not the final winners, was creditable. They won their match against Christchurch by 14 points to 3 points, but in the final lost to Southland by 8 points to 6 points. The boys were much indebted to their hosts at Invercargill for their generous hospitality. The rector stated that he wished also once more to acknowledge the warm interest shown by the presence of seveial of the senior old boy's.—Approved.
