BOWLING
DUNEDIN CENTRE.
MEETING OF DELEGATES
A meeting of the Dunedin Bowling Centre was held last week, the president (Mr H. Rowley) presiding over a good attendance of members.
CORRESPONDENCE.
In response to a letter from the secretary asking if the City Council could find space at Logan Park for the construction of a bowling green, the town clerk wrote stating that the centre’s request had been placed before the Reserves Committee of the council. It was stated that there was a suitable area of land available for the construction of bowling greens. The committee was prepared to give the association an option for the lease of this land, the option to remain in force for a period of two years.—lt was decided that a subcommittee consisting of the president and Mr Sullivan go into the matter. The Anderson’s Bay Bowling Club wrote protesting against the practice of playing for trophies in the Wednesday competitions, stating that in the club’s opinion such a practice militated against the socialibility which had hitherto been a feature of the competitions.—After some discussion it was decided to hold the matter over until the following meeting, the delegates to place the position before their various clubs.
A letter was received from Mr J. Hope offering to present a shield to be competed for by the Dunedin clubs in the Wednesday competitions, the shield to be known as the Hope Shield.-—Received in the meantime. A communication was received from Thomas Taylor, bowls manufacturer, of Glasgow, to the effect that, in view of the persistent rumours circulating in New Zealand and Australia to the effect that bowls manufactured at present were not so good as those made before the war, on account of the Government having commandeered lignum-vitae, or bowl wood, for war purposes, it was desired to publish an emphatic denial of the truth of such rumours. At the end of the war there was a temporary scarcity of good heart wood on account of the shortage of labour in the West Indian Islands, where the wood was procured, but this had long since been overcome, and there was a plentiful supply of the best quality seasoned lignum-vitae.—Received, copies of the letter to be distributed amongst the clubs. CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT. After the draw for the coming season had been discussed the question of the Christmas tournament was placed before the meeting.—Mr D. C. Cameron stated that he had discussed the Christmas tournament with the president of the South Canterbury Centre. Timaru bowlers were concerned about the success of their annual tournament at Timaru if the Dunedin Centre also held a tournament at Christmas.—Members generally agreed that there was no desire to do anything to prejudice the success of the Timaru tournament, and urged all players who usually attended that tournament to continue to do so.—Mr Cameron assured the centre that the Timaru bowlers would give a hearty welcome to all visitors from Dunedin.—lt was decided to hold a doubles tournament at Christmas for the benefit of Dunedin players who could not travel elsewhere, and also to wish the Timaru tournament every success.
