SUBSIDIES FROM GOVERNMENT. DISAPPROVED BY FARMERS’ UNION. INVERCARGILL, September 21. The question of a Government subsidy for the South Island-Melbourne shipping service was reopened at the monthly meeting of the Southland Executive of the Farmers' Union on Saturday, when a strong deputation representative of the leading local bodies concerned with the welfare of Southland waited on the executive to stress the importance of the service and express the regret felt at the previous action of the union in advocating a discontinuance of the subsidy. When the deputation retired the executive showed no change of attitude, and the discontinuance of all subsidies for shipping services to countries .hich raised tariff barriers against the importation of New Zealand produce was advocated.
After a discussion the following resolution was adopted :—“ That in the opinion of the Southland Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, owing to the economic situation and the trade barriers raised by Australia and America curtailing New Zealand trade and causing adverse trade balances against New Zealand, all shipping subsidies to these countries should b n made a matter of egotiation with the Governments concerned, and not renewed until trade with these countries can be re-established on a fairer basis than at present.”
