CANADA AND NEW ZEALAND.

IMPROVED SHIPPING SERVICE. POSSIBILITIES TO BE INVESTIGATED. WELLINGTON, February 6. For the purpose of investigating on the spot the possibilities-in regard to an improved shipping service between Canada and New Zealand, and for extending the already growing trade between the two dominions, Mr R. B. Teakle, general manager of the Canadian j National Steamships, and also representing the Canadian National Railways, arrived in New Zealand by the Niagara 10 days ago. He expects to be in New Zealand about six weeks, and is to inspect the several branches of his company which at present maintains a monthly service of cargo steamers between New Zealand and Eastern Canada via the Panama canal. “ This service between the Atlantic coast of Canada and your Dominion is proving highly satisfactory,” states Mr Teakle. “ While Ido not wish to discuss publicly questions of reciprocal trade between our two countries, I will say that our boats never return to Halifax or Montreal empty. There is a market in Canada for your New Zealand products, and I believe that there is also a very fine market here for Canadian goods. My visit to New Zealand is a joint one. I am charged by the president and chairman of the Canadian National Railways to go into the matter of the railways as well as of the steamships in connection with our freight service, with the object of developing the business between our two countries. I am here to see just what the situation is, to get acquainted with the people on the spot, and to see if we cannot do better both for you people in New Zealand and for ourselves in Canada. We have at present some five steamers operating between Canada and New Zealand but we are prepared to put on additional steamers as soon as the business offering warrants it. We view the future with optimism and want to improve the service we arc giving you.”
