Representing approximately one-sixth of the total number in the Dominion, there are 15,639 hives of bees in the Palmerston North apiary registration district. according to the latest published figures. The number of apiaries is 1234. Classified according to breed, the colonies comprise 6864 Italian hives —2300 black, and 6475 cross-bred.
While work was proceeding at the reconstruction of the Reefton County Chambers, an interesting relic was found behind the mantel in the clerk’s roqm in the shape of a Greymouth Star extra published 33 years ago, which related that a slip at the back of Jones’s Hotel, Wallsend, caused the destruction of the hotel and adjoining house, and the loss of eight lives (seven children), and injured four other persons.
