TAXI-WAR IN AUCKLAND.
AUCKLAND, January 13. The latest news in the passenger transport spheres of Auckland, where a “ taxi war ” has been waged relentlessly for the past two years, is that a new service is to be inaugurated at Wellington this week-end. when the people of that citv will be the spectators and the profiting participants in taxi rivalry. A strong contingent of owner-drivers in a wellknown Auckland organisation is withdrawing in order to open the campaign in the south- —a move that is being ur.i taken at the request of certain interests in Wellington, where, it is alleged, there is room for this project. The mvaders from Auckland, under the name of the “ Grey Taxis.” will be strong challengers for favour with the “ Is per mile ” slogan At present mobilisation is taking place in the shape of the repainting of 10 cabs, and then will follow’ the run to Wellington, where a very central garage is being fitted up, including a special system ol telephonic communication. The advance guard will be further reinforced within a week or two of the establishment. “Th rates_ here are now so low and competition is so keen that we know re can do better at Wellington.” said the leader f the party’ to-day.
