A SERIOUS CHARGE.
WOMAN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL, AUCKLAND, January 13. Allegations that she became extraordi. narily "violent and acted in a revolting way when her house was being searched were made by the prosecution when Maud Her. bert. aged 41. a domestic, was charged in the Police Court this morning with un< lawfully using an instrument on a young woman' It was stated that the young woman, who is now in hospital, is improv, ing, though her condition had been so bad that her depositions were taken by a magistrate. ’The girl’s mother stated in evidence that her daughter had been keeping com* pany with a young man. An engineer, to whom the girl was recently married in hospital, described a visit to Mrs Herbert’s house, where he left the girl. Later, he learned that the girl was in a serious condition. Dr E. J. Miller stated in evidence that upon his advice the girl was removed to hospital. Detective Knight, describing the search made in the accused’s house, gave what he regarded as abundant evidence of illegal activities. He also said that the accused behaved in a disgusting and violent manner.
Corroborating evidence was given by two detectives, who described Mrs Herbert s efforts to destroy certain evidence. The accused reserved her defence, and was committed for trial. An application for bail was adjourned to see how the girl in hospital is getting on.
