LAKE COUNTY.

January 17. —After several days ot glorious sunshine there was a break in the weather this morning, when there were several heavy showers. However, it cleared up at noon, aud is again fine. Cricket.—Teams from the Queenstown and Arrowtown Clubs met at Arrowtown on Saturday last, when a one-innings game ended in a win for Queenstown by G 4 runs. Scores -—Queenstown 113 (J. T. Lynch 49, A. Buckham 21) ; Arrowtown 49. None of the Arrow batsmen reached double figures. Bowling.—At Queenstown on Saturday last a four-rink match was played between visiting bowlers and representatives of the Wakatipu Club. The match resulted in a win lor Wakatipu by the narrow margin of three points—loo to 97. Lynch's rink was the only local one up.

Deaths.—Mr William Wills, whose death took place at Invercargill on the 2nd inst., carried on business in Queenstown as a butcher in the late ‘sixties. He was 88 years of age.—Mrs Hugh Jones, a former resident of Cardrona and Queenstown, passed away at the residence of her son-in-law. Mr George Canning, Invercargill, on the Bth inst.

Visit of Viscount Craigavon.—Viscount Craigavon (Prime Minister of Northern Ireland) and Viscountess Craigavon, accompanied by Mr D. Ardell (representing the Department of Internal Affairs) arrived in Queenstown on Monday evening. They were met by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Overton) and accorded an official welcome. On Tuesday the party visited the Big Beach sluicing claim at Arthur's Point, and on Wednesday they went to Head of Lake and Paradise. On Thursday the party left for Pembroke, where they will be the guests of Mr P. R. Sargood.

Personal.—Mrs F. M. Marks, of Alexandra, has been appointed postmistress at Glenorchy. - —Captain Coxhead and Lieutenant Craven arrived from the Wellington Training College on Friday last to take charge of the Queenstown Salvation Army Corps in place of Captain Askew and Lieutenant Boon, who have been transferred to Island Bay and .Winton respectively.—Mr E. Foord, an old Arrowtown boy, and his wife and two sons, were visitors to Arrowtown this week. Mr Foord is the eldest son of the late Mr E. J. Foord. and has been engaged in the tindredging industry at Siam for many years. He is at present on his biennial furlough. Arrow River Irrigation Scheme.—Messrs R. A. Rodgers (chairman of the Lands Purchase Board), R. B. Tennent (instructor in agriculture), T. M. Ball (district engineer, Dunedin), and F. Lindup (engineer Alexandra) visited the district during the week, mainly on business connected with the Arrow River irrigation scheme.

Main Highways Board.—The members of the Main Highways Board, who are on a tour of inspection of the main highways of Otago and Southland, arrived in the district yesterday. The board consisted of Messrs F. W. Furkert (chairman), C. J. M'Kenzie C? J. Talbot, A. Tyndall (engineer), and w’ A. Sutherland (secretary). Mr T. M. Ball (district engineer) also accompanied the party. Before going to Queenstown a short stay was made at Arrowtown, where they were met by the Mayor (Mr James Shaw). At Queenstown they met the Lake County Council, which had just concluded its bi-monthly meeting, when several matters were brought under the notice of the board. The party went south this morning.
