A LAST CHANCE.
THREE YEARS’ PROBATION . ORDERED. AUCKLAND, November 29. The theft of five cheques of a total value of £SG belonging to his employer was admitted by William Frederick Davcrne, aged 24, in the Police Court today. The police said that the accused was employed as a clerk, and instead of paying cheques to the bank he cashed them himself and went to Sydney last February. He wrote from Sydney to his employer regarding the matter, and subsequently returned to Auckland and gave himself up to the police without a warrant for his arrest having to be executed. He had been placed on probation for theft in 1923, and the probation officer said he had done very well during that period. The magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) said that in the circumstances the accused would be given a last chance. He was. ordered three years’ probation, and also ordered to make restitution of the £56.
