BRITISH MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION.

THE TARIFF CHANGES. ’ The annual report of the Council of the British (U.K.) Manufacturers’ Association of New Zealand contains the following clauses: — With declining imports following an economical period which has been consistently tightening up purchases, it is difficult to guage the effect on British trade of the recent revision of tariff, but with the inevitable increase in importations, it will be possible to arrive at a more definite conclusion, and an indication is obtainable from the fact that United Kingdom manufacturers contributed a higher percentage to New Zealand manufacturers for the months of July and August this year than has been experienced for a long period. As anticipated, the paper and confectionery sections have been adversely affected by the changes in duties, and the local manufacturers, in whose favour the alterations were made, have not benefited. Regarding United States competition, the balance of trade has been so eonsistently against New Zealand that your council thought it wise to publish in the press illustrative figures with an accompanying analysis. The figures quoted are official, and are as follows: — 1926. Imports from U.S.A. .. . £10,000,507 Exports to U.S.A 3,818,232 Excess of Imports .. .. £6,182,275 1927. Imports from U.S.A. .. £8.079,407 Exports to U.S.A. .. 2,681,091 Excess of Imports .. £5,398,376
