CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR HOLIDAYS.

BUSY TIME FOR RAILWAYS. Figures supplied by the Railway Department are interesting as indicating the huge passenger traffic which its services are called upon to handle during the Christmas holiday season. Last year the number of passengers carried during the period covered by the festive season reached the surprising total of 1,851,000. When it is remembered that the bulk of the journeys made were concentrated on the days immediately prior to Christmas. Day, some idea of the magnitude of the organisation necessary to provide suitable and adequate services can be gained. Present indications are that this year’s Christmas traffic will be exceptionally heavy, particularly during the period from December 14 to January 5, when excursion rates will apply. The various officials responsible for the arranging of the holiday time-table have been working at high pressure for some weeks. The task is now completed, and Christinas travellers can rest assured that no pains have been spared by the Railway Department to ensure that an adequate train service awaits their convenience.
