WELLINGTON NOTES.
(From Our Own Corresh. November 29. Private cable advice has been received that Donalbain (Paper Money—Glen Helen) won the Trial Welter, a mile race, at Epsom on the 24th inst. A few weeks previously Donalbain ran second to Streplion in a seven-furlong race at Aspendale. He was in the big field that contested the Maiden Plate on Derby Day at Flemington, but failed to get the jump out. Donalbain is trained at Flemington by W. Davidson for Mr Gersh Hyman, who was among the Victorians who came across for the sales two years ago.
Air and Mrs Stan. Reid, at present on a visit from Victoria, will probably return to Melbourne via the Bluff early next month, and be able to visit friends and relations at Christchurch and Dunedin.
Imported Joy Bird, who scored a win in her last start at Otaki, will probably be one of a small team the local owner, Mr W. Higgins, will send to Australia shortly. Kilbronsyth, Kilperon, and the two-year-old Pass Book may also make the trip. They will go in charge of E. F. Anile, as H. Telford, who has trained Joy Bird, cannot leave his team to make the journey. Some Dominion owners are getting the habit of going Home, and their absence will mean fewer owners racing here. The local owners Messrs E. L. Riddiford and H. P. F. Blundell have announced their intention of going, also Mr J. Al. Samson in the south.
Your correspondent was in Australia when the general elections took place, but was able to extend hearty congratulations to Mr E. F. Healy, the new M.P. for Wairau, at the Wellington meeting last Saturday. Mr Healy’s previous appearance in public was as a candidate for a seat on the Trotting Board. Ted Healy is well known in Nelson, where he acts as birdcage steward at both the Trotting and Jockey Clubs’ meetings; also in Marlborough, where he is on the committee; also a member of the Judicial Committee of the Trotting Club, and for some time has been breeding from that great trotter Hardy Wilkes. He also filled the position of hon. secretary to the _ Wairau Valley and Pelorus Hack Racing Clubs, which held successful nontotalisator meetings in the district. On the football field Ted Healy lepresented South Canterbury and Marlborough, and is an addition to the sports in the House. 1 his year Mr Charles Elgar gives the 100-guinea cup attached to the principal event at the Wairarapa Club’s meeting at Kew The chances are he will hot be there, as Talisker and Ver tiger n will most likely be running at Ellerslie. Mr Elgar has not had much luck on his own course. His pair, David Garrick and Vertigern were beaten for the last gold Cup by Ring Boy. Vertigern won on the second day, also in the autumn, but neither event carried a gold cup. Like some of the Rossendale tribe in Australia. Vertigern appears to have trained on into a solid horse.
Perception, who was sold out of J. T Jamieson’s stable at Randwick, and is now owned in the Malay States, is being brought across to compete in the Great Northern Derby.
