It is stated that Sir Henri Deterding, petroleum Croesus of the Royal Dutch and Shell Oil Companies, recently confounded a wealthy group of American art connoisseurs by outbidding them at an auction sale of treasured Dutch paintings. Sir Henri immediately presented most of the pictures to the Dutch museums. Baulked of their prey, the chagrined Americans called him “ The Buying Dutchman.” There are estimated to be 250,000 shops open in Britain every Sunday; of these 40,000 are in the London area. This Sunday trading Involves work fo* 2,000,000 people. It is stated that influenza in a mild form has been very prevalent in Auckland for some months past, and the change of weather roi winter to summer has b?en responsible for a fresh outbreak of colds. When neglected these colds are inclined to develop the symptoms of influenza, but the pneumonic type is at present rare. There is no justification for alarm in New Zealand because of the recent outbreak a virulent epidemic of pneumonic ina in certain districts of New South and Victoria.
