ATHLETICS

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ SCHOOL. FIRST ANNUAL SPORTS. Had the weather not been so unpromising during the whole of Wednesday afternoon and actually wet in the lattcr part, the first annual sport,? meeting of the Christian Brothers’ High School, which was held on the Caledonian Ground, would undoubtedly have been a very successful gathering. Something less than a dozen events remained to be decided when finally it was resolved to abandon the games for the day. J,r almost all cases the preliminaries habeen run off before the meeting was opened in the afternoon, and only the fina’s remained. The meeting was concluded on Thursday afternoon. THE OLYMPIC GAMES.

NEW ZEALAND MANAGER’S REPORT. ,

WELLINGTON, September 26. A report dated August 15, 1928, from the manager of the New Zealand Olympic team (Mr H. Amos), detailing the performances at Amsterdam, was presented to the Olympic Council to-night. Miss Watson, wrote Mr Amos, could not do her best on the day, and in the circumstances ran well. The swimmers were not class enough, although the girls were unable to do themselves justice, but even fit and well, they were not fast enough to win, nor was Lindsay. Miss Stockley was fortunate to qualify. She struck an easy heat. In the boxing section Cleverley did not rise to the occasion, and he fought disappointingly against a very average man. Morgan performed brilliantly, and the issues , were never in doubt. ' His fights were amongst the few where there were no disputings. The judging throughout was most unsatisfactory. A good boxer had no chance against a slogger. Many of the boxers were allowed to fight with their heads, elbows, and in some cases their teeth. Many of the decisions were badly received; and no wonder. In some cases there was almost a riot. The track at the Stadium was not too satisfactory, and it cut up badly. Canada was endeavouring to arrange an Empire sports meeting at Hamilton (Ontario) about August, 1930, and would extend invitations to the various governing bodies throughout the Empire to be represented. A southern hemisphere sports meeting between South Africa, Australia and New Zealand had also been suggested, the first meeting to take place in Sydney in 1929 or 1931 Africa and Australia were both in favour of it. Regarding the possibility of obtaining overseas athletic teams, Mr Amos stated that we might get a good German team. He found the Germans the best sports in Europe. The Canadians would be prepared to come at an early date, but harcily before the 1929-30 season. Canada had some splendid athletes. The New Zealand team will arrive back here about October 10.

STATUS OF THE DOMINION. SYDNEY, September 27. It is announced here that New Zealand has terminated the agreement with the Amateur Athletic Union of Australia, which has existed since 1897, owing to the. Dominion being now recognised as a nation by. the Internal Federation and the Olympic Committee.
