“We need a good man and a strong man as clerk of works on that job,” declared Mr A. Wade at a recent meeting of the Gisborne Harbour Board, when members were considering a recommendation from the engineer, Mr C. F. Marshall Smith, on an appointment for the sea wall contract (reports the Poverty Bay Herald). Members agreed that the position was one that required special qualifications in the appointee, and on Mr Wade’s motion it was decided to advertise the position of clerk of works on the job, at a salary of £6 per week. Mr G. Smith agreed with Mr Wade that contractors required watching, the connection of both members with the contracting business being the subject of facetious remarks by other members of the board. “There are contractors and contractors,” countered Mr Wade amidst laughter.
